Hydrogen

Spang Power Electronics, a recognized technology and application expertise leader, provides heavy-duty rectifiers for powering electrolytic cells that produce hydrogen from electrolysis. Electrolysis is the process of using electricity to split water into hydrogen and oxygen. This reaction takes place in a unit called an electrolyzer. Spang supplies electrolyser manufacturers and hydrogen producers rectifiers to power these hydrogen generating cells.

For over 50 years, Spang has been perfecting our rectifier technology through field use under rugged conditions and diverse applications. Realizing that a rectifier which does not deliver peak performance year in and year out will cost our customers considerable profit, Spang designs each rectifier for the highest quality and reliability while maximizing power quality and energy efficiency. Spang’s highly experienced engineering teams design rectifiers to withstand even the harshest of environments, offering decades of reliable service.

Spang applies a variety of rectifier technologies and topologies in support of hydrogen generation including:

  • 6, 12, 18, and higher pulse rectification with SCR (thyristor) only control as well as DC bus front ends for high-frequency designs
  • High-frequency IGBT based designs (SMPS or DC chopper applications) for power control in place of SCRs (thyristors)
  • Special ripple filtering utilizing inductive and / or capacitive filtering to meet electrolytic cell ripple requirements
  • Digital control technology with high-speed networking and holistic alarm and fault monitoring
